Overview of different filament yarn types – ATY, FDY, DTY, Plied yarns by Technofibres Luxembourg

High-Performance Yarns – starting from just 200 kg

Our portfolio of high-performance yarns, including ATY, DTY, flat and high-twist yarns, offers a wide range of yarn counts and textures for diverse applications – from fine and flat to vibrant and textured. These high performance yarns combine technical reliability with outstanding colourfastness and durability, making them ideal for demanding industrial and automotive uses.

ATY – air textured yarn

The yarn is hot-drawn in an initial step for the production of ATY. It is then fed into an air jet, where varying feed rates and airflows create interlacing and entanglements between the filaments.

ATY yarns are lightweight and voluminous. They are more compact than DTY yarns and have a slightly rough texture that is similar to wool.

Property Range
Fineness range (single yarn) 200 dtex to 3,500 dtex
Filament range (single yarn) 24 to 1,152
Filament fineness (DPF) 0.7 dtex to 8.5 dtex
Yarn character Flat to highly textured

DTY – drawn textured yarn

Friction yarn; friction-textured yarn; false-twist textured yarn

To produce DTY, the feed yarn (POY) is heated under tension and passed over rapidly rotating ceramic or PU discs, where it is friction-textured. The yarn is untwisted again as it leaves the discs, which gives the process its name, “false-twist texturing.” Heat is then used to set the textured structure. The bulk level of the yarn can be adjusted through specific machine settings. If filament interlacing is required, the yarn can be processed additionally with an air-jet nozzle.

DTY yarns have a soft and elastic structure, similar to cotton.

Property Range
Fineness range (single yarn) 50 dtex to 334 dtex
Filament range (single yarn) 24 to 576
Plies 1 to 4
Filament fineness (DPF) 0.7 dtex to 8.5 dtex
Elasticity Very low to very high

FDY – fully drawn yarn

Fully drawn yarn; flat yarn

In the production of FDY, the yarn is hot-drawn in one or more stages. The high drawing ratio in the manufacturing process gives the yarn its high tensile strength. FDY yarns are characterised by a smooth surface and can be produced with a high-gloss finish.

Property Range
Fineness range (single yarn) 100 dtex to 3,500 dtex
Filament range (single yarn) 24 to 1,152
Filament fineness (DPF) 0.7 dtex to 8.5 dtex

Twisted yarns

Twisted yarns are produced through a twisting process. The number of twists per metre can be adjusted individually. These twists create a firm, stable and compact yarn structure. These yarns are more durable and resistant to mechanical stress due to their high twist level.

Property Range
Fineness range 76 dtex to 1,000 dtex
Twist range 80 tpm to 350 tpm
